Flakie Friday: Jelly Sandwich with Essie As Gold As It Gets and Darling Diva Polish XOXOX

EssieAGAIG-DDPXOXOX-2

For this week’s Flakie Friday post, I decided to try something new to me – a jelly sandwich with flakies! I used Essie As Gold As It Gets and Darling Diva Polish XOXOX for this squishy mani! Since it’s technically still the Lunar New Year Period, I figured I should still stick with ‘auspicious’ colours like these.

Darling Diva Polish XOXOX is a Barbie pink jelly with a scattering of medium and tiny holo hex glitter. Essie As Gold As It Gets has a clear base filled with gold flakes.

Starting with DDP XOXOX, I alternated two coats of the pink jelly with two coats of the Essie. I chose not to finish off with another coat of jelly as I did not want to ‘bury’ the flakes. I then added top coat.

The first photo was taken under my daylight lamp.

Challenge Day 25: Inspired by Fashion

D25-Fashion-03

So, today’s theme is Inspired by Fashion. When I started planning for today’s nails, the New York Fashion Week was going on. I thought I would google some photos and pick at least one to re-create.

But then, I wasn’t too motivated by that as I would be doing it just for the sake of it. Instead, I thought I should select something I like or which means something to me.

I don’t know how the idea struck me, but somehow I decided that I wanted to do nails inspired by one of my favourite TV characters ever: the highly lovable Abby Sciuto from NCIS. If you watch the series, you’ll know that she is one uber-smart forensic scientist, who happens to be a Goth. Abby wears a lot of cute plaid skirts and there are often skull-and-bones designs incorporated into her wardrobe. And those are the two aspects I chose to do for today’s look.

Challenge Day 24: Inspired by a Book

D24-ABook-03

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’d probably have figured out by now that I’m a bit of a bookworm. I have to say I feel sheepish describing myself as one now as I no longer read as much as I used to. I do blame the distraction brought about by social media to a rather large extent. There’s just so much to read now that I find it challenging to focus on reading a book! And here I am, adding to it! LOL!

Anyway, as a book lover, I naturally have some favourites. When planning for today’s theme – Inspired by a Book – it wasn’t difficult to decide on a book I hold dear and close to my heart – The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupery.

This is a book I love so much that I have a couple of different prints in English, the original French version, two Chinese translations (bought the second one because I didn’t like the first translation as much), and a Spanish version. I’ve not been able to read the French and Spanish versions yet, but there’s always the possibility I’ll learn to someday!

Read on for the inspiration behind the design on each nail!

Challenge Day 22: Inspired by a Song

D22-ASong-02

We now venture into abstract territory. The theme for Challenge Day 22 is Inspired by a Song.

While I do listen to English-language music from time to time, I’m still more of a Mandarin and Cantonese pop girl. I did contemplate using a Chinese song, but I was certain some things will get lost in translation.

After much to-ing and fro-ing, I settled on a song I’ve loved since I first heard it: Dear Jessie by Madonna. The song came from her Like a Prayer album, the first Madonna album and also the first English-language pop album I purchased. It wasn’t too critically acclaimed when it was first released, but I really loved the fairy tale and dreamy landscape it portrayed. If you’re not familiar with the song, or wish to re-acquaint yourself with it, you can watch the music video on YouTube.

I used a bunch of polish shades for this mani. They include: China Glaze I’m Not Lion; China Glaze Starboard; Essence Make it Golden; Nubar Honeysuckle; OPI Don’t Touch My Tutu; Orly Mermaid Tale; and Tony Moly GS10.

Challenge Day 14: Flowers

D14-Flowers-03

Day 14 of the Challenge: Flowers. I thought of the various ways I could do this, and then I recalled I had some small dried flowers meant for nail art that I’d not used before. So, I literally wore flowers on my nails!

To contrast with the rainbow colours of the flowers, I opted for a soft, neutral polish. My choice was OPI My Pointe Exactly from the New York Ballet collection.
